Tea’s journey to your table
China and India are two of the world’s largest tea producers. While it’s a long trip from there to your table, every step of the way has been carefully thought out and time-tested. It takes carefully nurtured and processed tea leaves to make a hot cup of tea. But did you know that green and black tea both come from the same plant? The difference between them is how the leaves are processed. They are fermented and dried for black tea, while for green tea the leaves are steamed before they are dried.
A recent phenomenon is Matcha tea, with its concentration of antioxidants, several times higher than what you would find in ordinary green tea. Matcha tea also accelerates metabolism. But talking about matcha tea, it is nevertheless still green tea, specifically the youngest leaves from the tea plant ground into a fine powder. Besides green and black tea, you can indulge yourself with fruit teas. They are mainly made from hibiscus and rosehip mixed with orange peel and dried apple. Adding dried fruit gives fruit tea its particular flavor.
How is tea drunk around the world?
Tea is normally flavored with honey and lemon. But elsewhere they are not quite so common. So what are the customs in other countries?

You’re probably familiar with the English habit of sipping black tea with milk. But have you tried this combination for yourself yet? It’s enough just to follow the instructions for making the tea and then add milk or cream. It’s impressive!

There’s a drink in India called masala chai that has come to light. It’s a tea with a lot of spices such as cardamom, ginger, star anise, cloves, cinnamon or nutmeg.

Besides milk, people in India also enjoy drinking tea with cocoa, adding cinnamon and cardamom to it as well. The tea has to be drunk while it is still hot, or else it quickly becomes bitter. Truly an unconventional experience!

If you like to experiment, try Pu-erh tea with a little butter, salt or soda. Tibetans and others living there derive both energy and essential minerals from drinking it.
